LEDA Cruise ship Cabin Card found in Penguin first Edition

Found inside a 1954 Penguin Paperback Book .

The list of books in which the Cabin Card was found is below:-

The story of the Leda took me back through 3 Ships -

One "Leda" (Oil Tanker)in 1914 Secured in Bermuda in the outbreak of the 1st World War while still flying the German Flag after being built in Germany and launched there.but paid for by an American Oil Company which led to Arbitration on Ownership and Seizure in War.

One other "Leda" (War Ship) was sunk by German Submarine Torpedoes while sailing at  the rear of a British  Convoy with the loss of 86 lives , it took 90 minutes  to sink so 349 men survived.

Lastly until 2002 renamed as the "Star of Venice" the 3rd Leda a Cruise Ship now run aground in Alang , India and cut up for scrap.

Thanks to Shipping Monthly 2002, Vol 37, No.3 for letting us all know some of the story of the Cabin Card found inside a Penguin, bought from second hand book stall in Virginia Water, Library , Surrey the week they began moving the village FIRST WORLD WAR MEMORIAL to provide additional car parking.

The Bayonet

WHILE OUT WALKING IN THE LOCAL COUNTRYSIDE my foot hit the point of a BAYONET in the recently laid rubble Farm Path leading to the swing gate out off the Public Footpath on to the road that runs round Ascot racecourse.

Gosh what's this I said to to my wife an gently lifted the BAYONET point out of the ground.

It was quite rusty but mostly undamaged . I took it to the car and when we drove home scrubbed it in a pale of water and here it is.

Looking in the internet I found a very helpful source of information who kindly wrote to me with the attached sheets of info.

Later on we visited Leeds Armoury and there were loads of them lining the wall inside all shining bright - so no rarety just where and when had it come from?

Nice storey SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN apparently the English garrison at Windsor Csatle close by to the find were issued with reinforcement from there both Arms and Soldiers.1854 - so ME the Great Great Great Grandson of a Gravedigger of Kiklbirnie Church in Scotland 1854 found and dug up a 1854 Bayonet at Ascot Racecourse.

The Letters received are as follows

The way they were used were like this at the recent Royal Holloway University History Festival

By the way the BOOTS I was wearing were Chris Brasher Gortex walking boots which saved my toe.

Bursting the Flood - 12th Januray 2017

Phew ! I got home to a Flood last night what a bloody flood it was , all across my gravel drive what was the reason not because.

It was because of the Drain blocked next door where  the Stop Cock was dripping and all of the Sewage was leaking and hitting, the upstand which was rising and therefore  surmising it was a Burst Pipe was just complete conjecture.

In my time we called it a Blockage in Drains taking stock of things that had happened, when home from my walking, from work to my door....https://youtu.be/cdIXgKyhtbM

Just to clean up now ...in the spring perhaps !

In Memory of John Chick - cousin on my Female side of the Family

This Rose 'Penny Lane' was planted on Friday 10th April 2016 in memory of John Chick my cousin aged 67 - Melrose Borders Hospital, pain ward, Scotland.

I chose this colour as John and I often watched football on TV on Saturday afternoons eating Cockles a traditional English Dish -  in his home - my Lodging in 1978 - near the Thithe Farm Pub.South Harrow (now a modern housing)

John was inspected by his Doc. and asked to go in to Hospital where he passed away due to Cancer within 2 weeks .

The Family  with friends locally in Kelso will scatter his ashes in the River Tweed in memorial . His  Mum my Aunt went to Wembley Grammer with my Mother in 1934

John  served after school worked in a Fishmongers, Managed Kenning Car hire on the A30 near Heathrow Airport commuting back and forth to Sudbury Hill and  in Saudi Arabia as Laundry Manager to the Hospital in Khamis Mushayt with Witickers(US), on return with ill health (Hepatitis) he then moved to the West Country and finally Kelso.
John was a keen Jazz fan as was his father Jack .

When the Saints come marching in ..they will be rolling their own Ciggies with the Ritzla Machines you broke John.
